Banned by Microsoft for no reason

Live Search by Microsoft (also known as MSN) has banned Convert-me.com. I learned it only when I was browsing the stats and saw the number of site visitors from MSN dropped to zero. Before the ban (e.g. in October 2006) there were up to 1,000 visitors from MSN each day.

I went ahead and checked which pages of convert-me.com were in the MSN search base. There were none. You can check it yourself with a search query "site:www.convert-me.com". The similar query for my blog site "site:sergey.gershtein.net" shows that this one is indexed. So I re-submitted convert-me.com to MSN and then checked the results in a couple of weeks. Still nothing.

That's how I learned the site had been banned. However I still have no clue why. We never sent any SPAM. We never used any illegal search optimization. We never had any illegal content. Why did Microsoft banned us?

Unfortunately all my attempts to contact Microsoft asking to re-include our site to their search results or at least let me know why they banned us were in vain. No results. Not a single reply. They seem to be too big to bother.

If you don't think convert-me.com is illegal and should be banned, you can support us by letting Microsoft know about it. I am not sure it could help, but if you can spend a couple of minutes to fill in Windows Live Feedback form telling Microsoft know what you think I'd truly appreciate it.

Your comments on the issue are very welcome.

P.S. (added later) I am very much excited to receive so many comments from you all, thank you very much for your support! I appreciate it a lot. Even if you help does not remove the ban, I am very happy there are people who like our project and who are ready to help.

News Update. On March 5th, 2007 our site re-appeared in Microsoft Live Search. I am sure this would not be possible without your support. Thank you very much!

Maybe it's got something to do with another site they list via their search, called convertme.com (http://www.convertme.com/convert-me-l.html) which is some religious thing.

But, who cares about mirosoft and their lame msn search when you got Google, and they do list you :-)

All the best,

I sent them this comment:

I understand that the Website convert-me.com--which is a utility for converting values to different measuring units--has been delisted from MSN. Could this be because its name is similar to that of a religious site called convertme.com?

Sergey,

What makes you think your website has been banned? I know from personal experience that live.com have been in "beta" for quite some time and they have had numerous problems. See this post for an example. It could be due to internal problems, so perhaps wait a while longer.

In any case, I personally don't pay attention to live.com too much. If I do a "site search " on my own website I get around 680 results which is pretty comprehensive BUT my website stats show a miniscule 0.008% (yes, eight thousands of one percent) referrer traffic coming from MSN/live.

It looks like it was due to the fact that your web name has the word "Me" in it and when doing a search for Windows-Me stuff, your website probably popped up in first 10 listing. Microsoft has always been very concerned about their product names. About other religious sites I don't think there is anything wrong with that.
Just a thought.

PS: Very good website though. Keep it up.

i think this problem should be dealt immediately.

Thank you everyone who posted comments to Microsoft or here, I appreciate it!

Yes, I know Google and Yahoo are used much more than MSN, but there are people using MSN though. It's a pity they can't find our site now.

I think the site has been banned since it disappeared from MSN over a month ago. Since then I tried to re-submit or get any information or any reasons for the site to disappear, but all was in vain.

Again, thank you all very much and have a merry Christmas!

My guess, looking at the source of your pages, is that they do not like the look of the hidden keywords list in your page under the 'noscript' tags (a list of keywords about 3/4 of the way down your page source).

Whether deliberate or not, if a search engine deems that you are trying to bias their rankings with hidden content then it can remove you from its listings. In this case the list of keywords does not appear when I view the page, but does appear in the source.

So I reckon that if you remove that from the source of your pages then you will probably be back in their results within a couple of weeks.

A friend of mine had his site removed from Google search results after he played around with hidden content. So you may find the same thing happening with Google. My advice to you is to make sure that you design your content so that nothing can be deemed to be suspicious.

Again, I'd like to thank everyone who responded here or sent a comment to Microsoft.

My special thanks to anonymous who commented about hidden keywords. There are indeed hidden keywords that are displayed only in browsers that do not support JavaScript. It was made this way so while normal (JavaScript-enabled) browsers display the conversion form, older (or over-secured) browsers at least display links to conversion factor pages.

I don't know whether this "hidden" text could provoke the ban. But I'm going to make these links visible just in case. That'll produce unneeded link block for normal browsers though.

Thanks again for a useful comment.

I'm an editor from Canada, and I rely on your site to convert from Imperial to metric measurements. Honestly, it's the best conversion site I've found. For example, yours is the only site that makes a clear distinction between U.S. and British gallons when converting fuel efficiency/consumption figures from mpg to L/100 km. Trying to figure that out on my own was almost enough to make this Canadian's head implode!

And as others have stated, MSN Search just sucks. I spend a large part of my workday fact-checking, and I use either Google.ca or Yahoo! Canada.

Sergey, here's what I wrote: "I use convert-me.com all the time and appreciate the site immensely. According to the site owner, msn has banned convert-me.com. This is not as bothersome as the fact that no one at msn will respond to him. convert-me.com is a fantastic units & measurements conversion site that is very helpful to me in my business. On the web since 1996. I respectfully request that someone contact him at least to let him know why his pages are banned. Thank you for your consideration." Michelle, WA, USA

Like most people who use your very useful site I have it bookmarked, and it's on a starting tab in Firefox, so the fact that NSN has banned you is of no consequence to me personally. I have however taken the opportunity yo bollock them over this and suggested that it's the religious sites they should be banning not the useful ones.

Perhaps M$ are about to launch their own conversion site and are trying to sabotage the opposition.

Let's see if it's true and convert-me.com gets back to MSN within a couple of weeks. As soon as it happens, I'll be happy to remove the "banned by MSN" note from my site.

It's about Steve Jobs (Apple Computer) and Bill Gates (Microsoft) back in their early days. I highly recommend the movie. Find out more at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirates_of_Silicon_Valley . As far as Microsoft search engines, don't use 'em. Windows, I cuss it daily. My next PC, a MAC. Here is what I sent to Microsoft: Why have you banned the website: www.convert-me.com ? It is the best conversion tool I've found and use it all the time. I don't use any Microsoft search engines because you can't beat Google and as long as you drop good sites, you never will. I am unsure as to why MSN would not allow your site to be listed. Like someone said before me it could just be as bug, and Microsoft thinking that they don't need to worry about something they see as a trivial site they ignore. As Microsoft actually supports Google, and ask.com and quite a few other search engines.

Me personally. I don't use any of those search engines, including google. I prefere www.mamma.com as my search engine, which I have used since I started surfing the internet, and is also the search engine which allowed me to find your site.

I have had your site bookmarked for well a long while. As I deal with international users on my site and it makes it easier when they can use there own units of measure without having to worry about converting. So I want to thankyou for the service.

Microsoft is far too proprietary in every area. Personally I just use google for searching anyway. I found you easily with Google and really really really really appreciate your conversion tables. Thank you so much. Phooey to microsoft.

I've never used this search engine, (because it's worthless, obviously) but if it's affecting traffic, then know that I also sent them a comment on convert-me.com's behalf. It's a very useful site.

I am glad I use google and was able to find your site

Great site!

I've sent a query to MSN . . . monopolies are so idiotic!

We're only taught metric here, so I use your site all the time.

I once typed convert_me by mistake and found myself on an evangelical site. I wonder whether MS have got you mixed up with them? I am a devoted fan of your site, it's superb.

I was going to say that I simply could not exist without your site. But that would be a slight exaggeration. However I will say I often have to convert metric/imperial etc and doing so would certainly be not so easy without your site. It is by far the easiest and most versatile. Many thanks for your good work.

Added a feed back to micro$ofts web form. I always use Google. I wouldn't worry to much about MSN Live.

By the way Yahoo.co.uk has you at the top of the list.

Left complaint on msn. not sure they will bother but you know what? we don't really bother about them either: google has the vast majority of the search market share so realx... just forget about them.... it'll take them yars before they have the algorythm + the brand empathy of google. love your site use it all the time thanks for that, super useful. it's on my bookmark bar

I am very grateful to find your site. It is simple to use and very helpful. I used it this time to get a list of how much 20 lbs of different substances equates to in the measurements that are listed on the individual packages. I just found out that I am pregnant and was told not to lift more than 20 lbs. At the grocery store this isn't easy to estimate, especially with cat litter and such. It will also be useful to me in my job as a long haul truck driver. I WILL let MSN know what I think of them banning your site! Keep up the great work!! Thanks sooo much! Virginia B

Hi all!

I'm a mech engineer from UK and have found this site extremely useful. So I filled in the feedback form.

The site's great buddy, don't worry about it.

You're top on Google. That's where I found it.

There are so many windows experts telling people to forgo vista and get a mac instead. I have both but I take MSN messenger and everything i can from microsoft off as soon as I get it.

I love your site. I have a site geared towards kids and education. If you don't mind, when I get my Math section back up, I will link to yours. My traffic is not fantastic, just over 3000 since spring 2005, but I still get hits on pages I no longer have navigation links to.
So Convert-me is now a friend of www.bouncingoffthewall.com

I need this site. I'm a bit lame when it comes to math and conversions. I use you a lot because some of my students use the metric system, and I'm still on miles and inches. I also use you when I email my e-pal from Germany. It's nice to be able to use the same measurements as she does.

Thank you for your site!

Thanks for your site. Although I have many conversions on my palmtop computer I did not have any for pressure and needed to convert millibars to cms of water. Your site did exactly that immediately. Thank you again.

ps I have sent feedback to Microsoft Live Search.

As a chemist, I frequently handle numbers and I have been using your site ever since. Especially my work environment uses the English system, and I am used to the Metric system.

I can never understand why MSN is banning your site. It's very helpful and user-friendly.

Sergey, you have a great site that my staff (and myself) use on a regular basis. Just requested an explanation from MS for not being able to locate your site on their search engine but the truth is, as others have already mentioned that Google has you right at the top and that is probably what really counts
